Railcar Shuttle and Switchman Operations|
Locomotives, gondolas, boxcars, tankers, flat cars, lumber cars, and even remote controlled engines. No matter what you haul, someone will have to move it, and the cars all must be spotted or moved for loading and unloading. Many industries have their own switch engine operations, and almost as many have little or no training for their employees.
The Operators and Switchman:
No matter who operates the engine, or who does the switching, everyone involved must be trained regardless of the task or responsibilities. Does your facility have safe job procedures, set policies, and structured training materials for your switching operation? If not, call Shephard's we may be able to help!
Not too many years have passed since a client of ours had a very serious incident where one of their switchmen was caught between two railcars. Not a fatality incident, but the loss of a limb was the result. Another incident occurred when switching cars to another spur. Two engines ran together, one fatality was the result, along with the total destruction of one of the engines.
This operation seems simple and easy! Nowhere to go but up and down the track, right? Wrong, "don't judge this operation by its simple design."
Don't wait until it is too late! Provide the training and information necessary to your employees to help prevent the possibility of a major incident at your facility.
Switching Operations Training Materials Includes:
Safety issues (on and near the rail situations), switchman communication and activities, need to know safety rail and engine use information, inspection and maintenance system recommendations, proper use and techniques for coupling and spotting cars, rail crossing and marking, in depth employee evaluation system combines written and operation issues, and more. Check this training out, it is not a video, it is training, and it requires a passing score! Qualify your operators through training and evaluation.
Pre-Training Rail Operation Safety Assessment:
Prior to conducting any employee training I would suggest that you conduct a safety assessment of your rail operations. Find out just how effective your rail and switching operation system is. Identify safety issues before they become major problems. Improve operational conditions by setting new and improved safety standards. How important is your rail and switching operations to your company?
Conduct Your Own Training, with Your Trainer:
